My Story

What parent doesn’t want their child to thrive while living abroad?

Unfortunately, moving overseas can be a very stressful experience for a child. Over the past 10 years, our family has lived in three, very diverse countries; Germany, China and Brazil. It has been a wonderful learning and growing experience for everyone, but it definitely has not been easy. Along the way, I have met several families whose transitions were incredibly difficult and whose children were not thriving. As a result, they either hated the experience, cut their assignments short, or separated their families. Fortunately, there are many steps you can take to prevent this from happening. With proper preparation, support and mind-set, living abroad has the potential to be a transformative (and fun) experience not only for a child, but for the whole family.

I’ve been an educator for 20 years and during our time overseas, I’ve worked at international schools in Germany and China. I’ve been a Parent Teacher Group President, a 5th grade classroom teacher, and a Curriculum Coordinator. I view the expat experience through the lens of both a parent and a teacher and have a real understanding of the challenges we all face. I’ve been blessed to work with students and teachers from around the world and it has changed how I teach, how I view education, and how I raise my children. I have seen what a difference an international experience and education can make in how children think, how they treat others, how they tolerate change, and how they tackle challenges. I’ve seen what living abroad has done for my children and the children of the many wonderful families we have been blessed to meet along the way.

I believe that when children learn about and experience the world they are better equipped to transform it. Expatriate children have the unique opportunity to gain a skill set that that will position them to be leaders of this change. This site provide parents, teachers and other stakeholders relevant content and high quality resources that support a child’s transition, settling in, and moving forward so that they can not only survive, but thrive, from the experiences they will have while living abroad.
